How to Write a Good Essay
Before students start writing an essay, they must choose a topic and make an outline that reflects what they intend to write regarding the chosen topic. The introduction part of the essay is where the student provides a brief overview of their topic to help a reader grasp the content of the essay. It is recommendable for the writer to provide a fascinating introduction to capture the attention of the reader. Beginning the essay with a "hook" - either a story, shocking revelation, dialogue, or a quote - helps to get the attention of the reader. The concluding paragraph of the introduction should provide a restatement of a thesis statement, which is usually a single sentence that tells the reader what the essay is all about. The thesis statement should align with the "hook" and form the basic premise for the entire essay. As such, writers should ensure the thesis statement is broad enough to capture all they have to say.
The body paragraphs provide the writer with an opportunity to go into detail about their topic, and it is where they explain, describe, or argue the topic from the perspective of the thesis statement. The main ideas that the writer developed when outlining the essay become separate paragraphs, each starting with a topic sentence. Just like a thesis statement, topic sentences carry the main idea that the writer talks about in that particular paragraph. The writer should also ensure they use transitions between paragraphs to foster the flow of information. The information in each paragraph should emphasize an aspect of the thesis statement. Lastly, the writer should ensure the information coming after the topic sentence includes supporting facts, such as existing official data or research findings.
The conclusion part of the essay is where a writer sums up the main ideas expressed in the introduction and the body paragraphs. Just like the introduction, this part consists of a few sentences, with one restating the thesis statement for purposes of emphasis. The writer should not introduce new ideas in this part.
Writing an essay is a learning activity in secondary and post-secondary education.
