US account and credit card for a "non-resident"
The United States of America is deservedly included in the top 10 most prestigious jurisdictions with attractive conditions for both living and doing business. Every year, the interest of foreign investors and businessmen is only growing in relation to this state, and many decide to register a company in the United States, obtain an American business license or open an account in America.
Case 1: Student
Not so unlikely. In the end, the world is getting smaller and a semester abroad is a great way to broaden your horizons. In addition, new cultures and improved English are not negative.
Case 2: Frequent Travel to the USA
And so it came to me on this topic. I was in the USA several times a year, sometimes for almost half a year, so once the topic became interesting, which in the end is the cheapest option when it comes to money.
Case 3: Shopping
Yes, shopping is always the reason but in the United States there are fun online stores where you can order something at your vacation address (yes, I hate shopping in stores), but as soon as you get a credit card not issued in the USA will be rejected. This makes ordering virtually impossible. Open an account. This is even the smallest problem. An account can be opened in almost all banks which shows here https://usa-banks.info/ as a "non-resident". There are a few exceptions, but they exist. Some banks do this already by specifying a social security number as a condition under which one acts as a German who does not work in the United States. Do not be embarrassed, because there is definitely no law or rule for this. There is little work on your way, since such an account cannot be opened online. In branches, it may happen that you have an employee who has no special ideas, especially if you are not located anywhere, for example, in New York or San Francisco, where many such cases have already been considered. During the audit, these banks immediately said “yes”: Bank of America, Chase and CapitalOne, and we, of course, checked not all, but only well-known names. In all cases, you will need at least your passport and ID, such as a driver’s license. My personal recommendation is to take a confirmation that includes your address, for example, an extract from a German bank.
Some banks really want to have a mailing address in the USA, and in some systems (CapitalOne) the engineering department has to fix it manually if you want to specify a non-American address (without jokes, the software will not allow this). There are several tricks: your holiday address, if you are there long enough, a friend’s address or just a service such as ShipItTo, where you can send your parcels from the USA, because the service also has an option in addition to the package address and the classic Process mail to your name. As I said, most banks will be like that, especially the three of us mentioned above.
Debit Card Immediately
A debit card will immediately deliver to you what you already have in your bag that was released in the USA. All you have to do is deposit money and you're done. This covers the needs of most customers. What does not work is insurance payments, as when renting a car (or only with exceptions and higher pledges).
Secure Credit Card and Credit Card
Yes, this is a crazy topic in a sometimes crazy country. If you are new to the United States, you will quickly come across the problem of not being able to buy a house or get any other loan, even if a good salary is proved. In the USA, everything is about famous credit cards and credit cards. In any case, you will not receive a full-fledged classic credit card. So, what remains as a precaution for working with a credit score before or as someone who is already in the US but does not have one? The solution is a “Safe Credit Card”, and you get it in almost all cases as a non-resident (you may have to trick the address a bit again).
But what is a secure credit card?
With a secure credit card, you make your first guarantee deposit, which is frozen. It also provides the accessibility structure that is available. So, if you pay 1,000, it will limit your credit card. From there, the card works 100% like a classic credit card. Then you must pay your monthly bill, and the amount deposited remains a deposit. What is this all for? Unlike a debit card, you build your credit rating here because on paper you have an active credit card. At Wells Fargo, these cards are not issued to non-residents, Chase, Bank of America and CapitalOne! If you really care about your loan, because you now live in the USA and you need a real credit card and other amenities, then the following rule applies: never exceed your limit completely, stay at the level of 30-50% and, of course, pay on time A real credit card doesn't have to be far, but you will ALWAYS need a social security number.
